Cars

Even when cars were still young, futurists began thinking about vehicles that could drive themselves, without human help. Everyday people think about how cars can be better in the future, Now at the start of the new century, it's worth taking a fresh look at this concept and asking how automation might change transportation and the quality of our lives.

Consider some of the implications of cars that could drive themselves.
• We might eliminate the more than ninety percent of traffic crashes that are caused by human errors such as misjudgments and inattention,
• We might reduce antisocial driving behavior such as road rage, rubbernecking delays, and unsafe speeds, thereby significantly reducing the stress of driving.
• The entire population, including the young, the old, and the infirm, might enjoy a higher level of mobility without requiring advanced driving skills.
• The luxury of being chauffeured to your destination might be enjoyed by the general populace, not just the wealthiest individuals, so we might all do whatever we like, at work or leisure, while traveling in safety.
• Fuel consumption and polluting emissions might be reduced by smoothing traffic flow and running vehicles close enough to each other to benefit from aerodynamic drafting.
• Traffic-management decisions might be based on firm knowledge of vehicle responses to instructions, rather than on guesses about the choices that drivers might make.
• The capacity of a freeway lane might be doubled or tripled, making it possible to accommodate growing demands for travel without major new construction, or, equivalently, today's level of congestion might be reduced, enabling travelers to save a lot of time.

So do you think that in the future that the cars that we drive , can drive themselves ?

Please comment thank you

Good topic and good idea for the car can drive themselves,In my opinion the technology is growth and believe in the future the car can drive with themselves becasue now we have GPS and i believe in the future use the same technology can drive themselves.

I heard about this before; we do not need drive our car, we just need to sit and tell where we want to go then that car will drive themselves. That car also can find alternative way to reach our destination as fast as possible. This is so nice, so we as driver do not need to feel stress when we drive car, but this also have disadvantages such as ; how if that car suddenly out of control or somebody sabotage the car.

I would love to have one of this car. Imagine!! I can sleep in the car but the car can drive itself to the place that i want to go. But in my opinion, this may need to take a very long period to develop and test before it can be sold.

Hey bro I would really want to have a Self-Driving Vehicle if there will be one...
I am pretty sure that one day innovators will come up with the sort of car you were mentioning about. This is simply because, each and every car manufacturer have been adding value to their cars to stay competitive in the market, therefore, i would not be surprised if 3 or 4 car manufacturers join venture in the future time and develop the self-driving car.

In this morden science every think is possible and science make every thing easier. Its not impossble that in future the cars will be drive by themself. Some of the company already start to do this as like GM.

The car will be capable of piloting itself at speeds up to 60 mph in heavy traffic without any input from the driver sitting behind the steering wheel.

GM claims the system, called Traffic Assist, will make driving safer and more relaxing. It uses lasers, a video camera and plenty of computing power to "see" signs, bends, other vehicles and lane markings, and to control the engine, steering and brakes to keep the car in the correct position on the road and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

The system is to become available on more models by the end of the decade — initially other cars on the Epsilon platform, including the next Saab 9-3, Cadillac BLS and Saturn Aura. Whether it will be launched in the U.S. will depend on whether administrators deem it safe — product liability laws are different in America.

GM expects the package to be about 50-percent more expensive than conventional active cruise control radar equipment, which controls distances but cannot steer the car.

Less than before a century of the Wright brothers people could not imagine of flying but now after a century of the Wright brothers, we have the F-22 superior jets dominating the skies. According to the Wright House webpage, “Wilber Wright and Oliver Wright developed the first form of modern aircraft in 1903.” Science and technology is being becoming better and better every day. It is logical to believe that in future we are going to have programmed cars with all those microchips that are going to take us to our desired destination. Something like the Kuala Lumpur LRT trains, which do not need any one to drive but it is able to get to different destinations by itself. However, the thing we are talking about in here is much more advanced than those trains because the trains follow tracks and the cars would not. I believe if we are capable of making the trains go by itself, in future we can also make the cars do so.

With technological advadvancements growing so strong, you don't know what new invention awaits you in the future. Very soon thye would even invent foods that cook themselves! yeah, i think its possible to have such a car in future. But i'm against it. You have machines that wash your clothes already, soon they would wash your car, and they next thing you know is they take your WIFE.! Keep these machines away from me.

I would love to have a car like this. Man I’m telling you it will be awesome because when I have a car with this technology I will feel I’m in the haven. But now I don’t want this car come to the market because I don’t have that amount of money to buy the car

Well, my friend it is very true that today with new inventions in technology anything is possible, concept of self driving cars are be used in many movies some of them were Demolition Man which was released in 1993, Fifth Element in which cars are not self driving but it fly’s. As the technology necessary to achieve the "autonomous" car arrives in stages every few years, some of it is already here, in options such as electronic stability control and blind-spot detection, it promises to sharply reduce traffic fatalities. All of this will be made possible and practical by use of computers, sensors, video camera’s etc. Narrowing down the information provided bye Saddam earlier, GM will be launching a vehicle with an actual self-driving system in its 2008 Opel Vectra. That’s right — thinks KITT, people, but without the smarmy voice (well, we assume, anyway). It will be able to pilot itself even in heavy traffic at up to 60 mph, which is more than we can say for most of our friends, really. It'll be using lasers, a video camera and a sophisticated computer brain to recognize signs and detect obstacles. Thanks for all the positive comment , i really appreciate it and i do believe in my opinion that this idea could be develop further it may not be today or tomorrow but it will come in the future , so keep your eyes open

ok, as we all know of the high speed of technology thats tacking place right now that will not let you predict what will be invented in a few days time. So anything is possible. self-driving vehicle i can already imagine it and as Saddam said GM have already done it.
For me i wont buy a car like that i trust myself more than the machine thats controlling the car.

Hey nice article to discuss, let me give my opinion first. This fact like the rest of the things through the world has its pro and cons. defiantly by introducing these types of cars through the markets, some jobs may be eliminated such as cab driving and so on. So the first problem is unemployment and the governments may be required to create more jobs to overcome to this issue and it requires education and lots of cash! But regarding to your question, yes why not?! Could we imagine in just 5 years ago seeing the car which is generating energy by water? Now in the States there are plenty of cars that are just driven by public and sourced by the liquid Hydrogen and producing vapor instead of monoxide Carbone. This is the evidence that shows how the world is improving via introducing new technologies. So as the reply to your article, yes for sure at the time you want to buy a car for your sonny’s graduation, you don’t have any headache of how safe it is going to be to let him drive alone, but the only thing you need to concentrate is on how to generate the cash to purchase it;)

PS. To Eric, you don’t know how worthy is having this type of car since you don’t need to concentrate just on the road while you are in your first date…….!!!! Try to guess the rest of the story!!!!

Anuar,I would love to have a Self-Driving car one day so that I won't need a driving license.Technology is growing so fast and it is possible of having a self-driving car in future. After launching a new car into the market, car manufacturer already start thinking and planning for the next car that is more updated in features and functions.

For example,GM will be launching a vehicle with an actual self-driving system in its 2008 Opel Vectra. A car without the smarmy voice. It will be able to pilot itself even in heavy traffic at up to 60 mph, which is more than we can say for most of our friends, really. It'll be using lasers, a video camera and a sophisticated computer brain to recognize signs and detect obstacles.

Is this car will be high quality and save to be on the road?

However, can people afford to use this self-driving car is another issue. The faster the technology grows, the higher unemployment rate. Therefore, producing a car that people can't afford will effect the company and economy as well.Everything have a limitation.

Well, cars can drive by own selves. I am not disagree with your idea because as we all know technology made a plane which run without any pilot so why not cars! I think these days are not so far from today where we don’t need to drive and cars will drive by it selves be half of us...
